In the The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, there are twelve districts
in Panem, a nation located in North America . Sixteen-year-old Katniss
Everdeen and her family reside in District 12. When the Reaping day
comes, Prim is chosen to be District 12's female tribute for the 74th
Hunger Games. Formed to punish the districts for rebelling against
Panem's Capitol, the Hunger Games gathers 24 tributes and pits them
against each other. Katniss replaces Prim and, with the male tribute
Peeta Mellark, takes part in the Hunger Games. There, they fight to be
the last ones standing, and become allies when the two of them both
get an opportunity to live. Katniss and Peeta, who has always loved
Katniss, become a couple in the audience's eyes, and therefore get a
lot of support. Katniss takes advantage of this and pretends to fall
in love with Peeta. When Katniss and Peeta are forced to fight to the
death after they are the only tributes living, they both attempt
suicide with nightlock berries, and they are stopped and declared
winners of the Hunger Games.
