In the dog’s first life, he was a feral animal, living in the wild with his mother and three siblings. His mother taught him to avoid humans, but he was helpless when a group of people caught him and took him to the Yard. It was full of other dogs, but a trio of humans fed all of them regularly and gave them attention. A woman who he referred to as Senora named him Toby. Toby craved Senora’s loving attention, but was forced to leave the Yard when a man of authority took many of the dogs away one day after a large dog named Spike severely injured Toby’s leg. He was taken to a room along with the other dogs that had no chance of survival.
In the beginning of his second life, he was adopted by a man who stopped to drink on the way home, and left his newly adopted puppy in the car. The dog became dehydrated, but a woman noticed him and poured water on him through the open window. She took him to her own home, where a young boy lived with his parents. The boy immediately fell in love with the dog and named him Bailey. They would play all day, and during the summers, visit the Farm where grandma and grandpa lived. Bailey was such a loyal dog that when Ethan (the boy) dived into a pond and did not emerge out of the water, he pulled him out and dragged him to the shore. The boy was actually just looking for something underwater, but was still impressed. As Ethan grew older, a boy named Todd became jealous of him and his success in football. His hatred towards Ethan was so great that he tried to burn his house down. Luckily, Bailey bit his leg and was able to warn Ethan’s parents. His parents were unharmed, but Ethan was injured. He would have to walk with the help of a cane, and his football career was over. During the time Ethan began to attend college, Bailey was becoming older and older. He was taken to the vet, and he knew his life would soon end. He was told that he had been a good dog, and that he could let go. Ethan was somehow able to make it to the veterinarian and say one last good-bye to his loyal dog.
To the dog’s surprise, it was reborn again, although it had fulfilled his purpose by being alongside Ethan. Also to its surprise it was a girl. She was adopted by a policeman, who named her Ellie and trained her to find people using her extraordinary sense of smell. With her knowledge from her past lives, she was especially good at rescuing people. Her owner, Jakob, always had a sense of sadness in him, which she could not heal. On one mission in which they had found a kidnapped girl, Ellie had to track down a criminal. He was armed with a gun and shot Jakob. Jakob was taken to a hospital and turned out to be okay, but Ellie had to be reassigned to a new policewoman, who attempted to get in shape and became a rescuer like Jakob. Maya, the policewoman, eventually succeeded after lots of hard work. She was able to work with Ellie and also married a caring man named Al. On one mission in the rubble of an earthquake, Ellie found a small child, but the path to him was full of toxic materials. She later lost most of her sense of smell and had to stop working. She eventually met Jakob again and saw that he had a happy family. On one trip to a school, Maya was told that a child was missing. Ellie somehow managed to track him down. He was in a sewer, trying not to fall into the currents of murky water. When he did, Ellie jumped into the freezing water and saved him. Later, like in the life before, she began to lose her energy, and was separated from a sobbing yet thankful Maya.
