Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan shared by khgar

She had a rich family and a large and beautiful house, Esperanza’s life was perfect. That was until her father went out one day and was killed by bandits. One of her relatives took over her land and proposed to her mother. Esperanza and her mother were now poor so they decided to go with a group of family friend servants to Mexico to find work. They all found jobs at El Rancho de lass. Esperanza had the jobs of taking care of the babies, cooking, and sweeping. A dust storm hit the ranch and after it was over Esperanza’s mom just wouldn’t stop coughing. The doctor said that she had Valley Fever and may not survive. Esperanza knew that her mother needed her mother. So, Esperanza started working in the fields to earn money to bring her Abuelita to the ranch. Then one day Hortesia’s (family friend) son Miguel had left with Esperanza’s money. The doctor told Esperanza that her mother’s health was improving and that she would be able to come home in a week. Soon Miguel came back with a surprise, he had bought Abuelita! One day Esperanza was teaching Miguel’s cousin to knit, and when she messed up Esperanza told her, “do not ever be afraid to start over”.
